The Heaven’s Door whiskeys were launched in early 2018 as a trio of American whiskeys, having been designed to be approachable for Dylan’s laid-back fan base and not just whiskey aficionados. Heaven’s Door is a collaboration between the well-known musician Bob Dylan and co-founder of Angel’s Envy, Marc Bushala.

The three initial whiskey releases were a Tennessee bourbon, double barrel bourbon, and a rye. Each different release comes in a hand designed bottle featuring some of Dylan’s own metalwork, though the Bootleg series is going to be different. In the case of Bootleg, each release comes in a ceramic bottle, featuring Dylan’s paintings from over the years.

Currently, the whiskeys are sourced from undisclosed locations, though there are plans to start up a distillery in Nashville, TN in an old church built in 1860. “Rather than make a single whiskey or work with one master distiller, we thought it would be far more interesting to work with various master distillers and blenders to make whiskeys that would each have their own unique signature,” said Bushala at the time. “By working with different whiskey artisans for each new expression, the portfolio would be more diverse and eclectic.”

Bushala embarked on a mission to connect with the artist and explore ideas. Together, they developed the idea of creating this new whiskey collection.

Whisky Review: Heaven’s Door Bootleg Series Volume 1

Vital Stats: 111.5 proof, 55.75% ABV. Aged 26 years and finished in Mizunara Oak barrels. Low rye mash bill. ~ $380 per 750ml bottle.

Appearance: Somewhere between a pale gold and a bright orange. The bottle comes with an individually numbered leather case to make it a collector’s item. The bottle itself is ceramic and hand-made, featuring one of Bob Dylan’s own paintings.

Nose: This one begins with plum and raisin, then delves into a light nuttiness. There’s also some background notes of vanilla bean and oak.

Palate: A medium bodied whiskey with a fairly long finish. Flavors of honeydew, vanilla, and a touch of clove spice. Given, the higher proof, adding a few drops of water bring out some of the more floral notes.

Heaven’s Door Spirits, in collaboration with Bob Dylan, announces the first expression of its limited edition Bootleg Series, a rare 26-year old whisky finished in Japanese Mizunara Oak barrels. This first release, dubbed Volume 1 of the Bootleg Series, is both a celebration of the creative spirit of Bob Dylan and the craft of fine whiskey at its best.

Jefferson’s Presidential Select 25 Year Old Rye Whiskey in US

Back in December 2013, Jefferson’s Bourbon put out an official statement announcing the release of their latest bottling – Presidential Select 25 Year Old and Presidential Select 30 Year Old. Based on Master Blender Trey Zoeller’s “luck” in finding older barrels of bourbon for bottling, and my previous experience with the brand, I knew that I wanted to get my hands on some tasting samples to see how these new releases would compare to their recent Presidential Select 21 Year Old release and their extremely popular Presidential Select 18 Year Old.

If you read my review of Presidential Select 21 Year Old you know that it fell short of my expectations and lacked the flavor profile of what I tend to look for in a well-aged bourbon. 

I’d like to thank them for providing the samples and saving me the arduous task of convincing the Redhead that I needed to purchase $450 worth of bourbon without every trying it.  Am I being paranoid or just perceptive?

Incredibly rare and highly-prized, Jefferson’s Presidential Select 25 Year Old is a well-matured straight North American rye whiskey. It is rich, spicy, and exceptionally smooth. A true classic

Tasting Notes

Nose: The nose is quite aromatic with toasted cereal, sweet vanilla, and dried banana chips. Very lovely experience on the nose.

Palate: Moving on to the taste, the rye shows a medium body with a tangy profile. The fruit notes on the palate move on to a nutty trail mix with coconut and chocolate shavings.

Finish: Some savory jerky notes on the finish.

Distillery Information

Stagg Distillery and the Old Fire Copper (O.F.C.) Distillery. Its namesake bourbon brand, Buffalo Trace Kentucky Straight Bourbon whiskey, was introduced in August 1999. The company claims the distillery is the oldest continuously-operating distillery in the United States. The company says the name “Buffalo Trace” refers to an ancient buffalo crossing on the banks of the Kentucky River in Franklin County, Kentucky. The Sazerac Company purchased the distillery in 1992.

This year’s batch was distilled in the Spring of 2001 and it matured in Warehouse K & L.

Templeton Rye Special Reserve 10 Year Old Rye Whiskey is, and always has been, a railroad town. During Prohibition, local bootleggers would smuggle Templeton Rye aboard livestock trains bound for Chicago and Al Capone. As the years passed, the world around Templeton changed, but the railroad is still here and so is The Good Stuff. Featuring a smooth body and a long finish, the Templeton Rye 10 Year is a testament to the people and the strong community spirit of Templeton, Iowa. For the last decade they’ve lived at the heart of our brand, and like the trains chugging through town, that’s never going to change.

Tasting Notes: Templeton 10-Year Reserve Single Barrel  Rye

Vital stats: Mash bill undisclosed, but has to be at least 51% rye; bottled at 104 proof/52% alcohol by volume; aged in charred, new American oak; MSRP of $399.99 for a 750ml bottle.

Appearance: This is dark whiskey, befitting something that spent 10 years in new oak. Deep amber. Solid legs on the side of a glass.

Nose: Even after half an hour, this is boozy in my Glencairn. But there’s a sweetness and a gentle spiciness underneath the ethanol. I smell cinnamon, chocolate orange jelly sticks and a whiff of raspberry habanero sauce. What I don’t smell is traditional rye grass. Seems like a decade in the barrel has been a stronger influence than the rye, in this case.

Palate: The first wave of flavor is dark chocolate and caramelized figs. The barrel comes through strongly again here, as it did on the nose. The rye is present too, but it’s not overwhelming and it’s not particularly reminiscent of the herbal or grassy flavors I often associate with ryes. In the mid-palate, I found a surprising spoonful of chocolate chip mint ice cream followed by a long, warm, charred-oak finish. A splash of water really helped open up this rye, mellowing it and rounding it out nicely.

This 2019 bottling of Michter’s 10-year-old rye whiskey marks the first release by the distillery’s new Master Distiller Dan McKee. The rye whiskey is one of Michter’s most anticipated bottlings, which generally gets released once a year. It certainly holds a place as one of my favorite rye whiskies.

Bottled at 46.4% ABV, or 92.8 proof, my sample bottle comes from barrel 19F965. Michter’s doesn’t disclose their mash bills, but press materials mention “a good amount of corn and malted barley” in addition to rye, which is at least 51%.

The nose includes rich aromas of maple syrup and buttered rye toast as well as a hearty dose of baking spices. On entry, the whiskey appears a little soft on spice. Instead, sweet brown sugar and vanilla coat the palate, allowing those rye notes and baking spices found on the nose to slowly blossom. In terms of spice, think pumpkin pie spice instead of an over-the-top cinnamon candy. Some candied pecan and burnt orange peel notes peak through as well. Heading into the finish, slightly astringent oak grips the palate. Not surprisingly, the medium length finish is sweet, citrusy, and a bit dry.

Michter’s 10 Year Single Barrel Kentucky Straight Rye

Michter’s 10-year-old rye never disappoints. The low barrel entry proof helps create a rich spirit, and this whiskey certainly tastes older than its age. In my opinion, it is these two traits that help Michter’s stand out. The suggested retail pricing is $299 for this whiskey, and I think it delivers big yet refined flavors for the asking price. Highly recommended. 9/10
