Country music star Brad Paisley is doubling up on his whiskey with the launch of his American Highway Reserve Route 2, his second bourbon release done in partnership with Bardstown Bourbon.

Each “Route” is a new whiskey journey, according to the brand. American Highway Reserve Route 2 is made up of three mashbills including 12 and 4-year-old Kentucky straight bourbons complemented by 8-year-old bourbon sourced from Georgia, blended to create a distinct flavor profile following a final aging aboard the “rolling rickhouse.”

The Route 2 batch toured the country along with Brad Paisley during the summer of 2021.

“Bourbon is like a song … the more life it has lived on its journey, the deeper the story, the richer it becomes,” Paisley said in a prepared statement. “This second batch has seen more miles. I think you will be surprised at the unique character a different journey created.”

Paisley said that for him, it’s always been more than putting his name on something. He wanted to find a partner with which he could shape the whiskey every step of the way.

In partnership with Bardstown Bourbon Company, Paisley touches every aspect of the product from the selection of barrels, the aging and the final blend, working closely with Bardstown’s VP of new product development, Dan Callaway.

“It’s been a fun journey so far and we’re excited to see where the next Route takes us.”

Distiller’s notes

The distiller’s notes show that aged notes of charred oak and leather combine with baked apple and almond on the nose with this whiskey. Toffee and cinnamon take the lead on the palate leading to a complex finish.

17 Year Bourbon Unveiled As Old Fitzgerald Spring 2022 Decanter Release

Noted as the ninth national release in this series, it also marks the first 17 year old in this line up.

As is typical with other modern Old Fitzgerald releases, this one comes bottled in an ornate decanter that denotes a green label that is consistent across previous spring expressions.

The Old Fitzgerald Bottled-in-Bond spring edition will be available in the 750ml size on an allocated basis. It meets the strict requirements of a bottled-in-bond: the product of a single distillery from a single distilling season, aged a minimum of four years, and bottled at 100 proof or 50% alcohol by volume. The edition is available at a suggested retail price of $185.

Angel’s Envy 2021 Cask Strength Bourbon, As evident in Angel’s Envy Cask Strength Bourbon Finished in Port Wine Barrels, blending the Portugal-based flavors of Port wine and the American tradition of bourbon is a recipe for a successful pairing. The drier elements of port and the sweeter elements of bourbon combine for a balanced profile that really stands out.

The founders of Angel’s Envy, the Henderson family, select “a handful of noteworthy barrels from its rickhouses to put through an extended finishing process in port wine barrels from Portugal. These special barrels bring forward distinct characteristics in the whiskey, giving each expression of Angel’s Envy Cask Strength a unique nose, palate and finish.” The selected barrels are 60-gallon ruby Port barrels, contributing to a smooth bourbon that manages to avoid being too sweet but does capture some of the wintry spirit port conjures.

Angel’s Envy released their first Cask Strength expression in 2012, offering only 600 bottles available in two states. Since then, the movement has grown, with fans of the brand clamoring to add to their collection with each new release, and this year the limited-edition release will be packaged in a hand-carved hardwood box, with 14,760 bottles available.

TX Whiskey Bottled-In-Bond Texas Bourbon recently launched its Blended Straight Bourbon, the third expression in its TX Experimental Series.

Previous releases from the TX Experimental Series include TX Experimental Rye and TX High Rye Texas Straight Bourbon.

The Woodford Reserve Distillery Series features one-of-a-kind offerings that let the distillery experiment and get creative. The latest in the Distillery Series is the Chocolate Malt Whisper. Master Distiller Chris Morris claims it as a “happy accident” since the production of the straight bourbon immediately followed the 2019 Master’s Collection Chocolate Malted Rye. A “whisper” of that previous distillation was left in the still, lending this bourbon a hint of chocolate malted rye character.

What is chocolate malted rye? Malting can apply to almost any grain. It is a controlled germination process that produces enzymes that can later increase sugar availability in the mash for the yeast to eat. Roasting the malted grain is the process that makes it “chocolate.” As the color of the grain increases, the intensity of flavor also increases. Primarily, dark beers like porters and stouts use chocolate malt–but whiskey is beer all grown up, after all.

Morris and Assistant Master Distiller Elizabeth McCall are behind the Distillery Series selections at Woodford Reserve. Each year, they select three distinct whiskies for the series. Each select whiskey comes in a 375ml bottle rather than 750ml, and is available in Kentucky.

Tasting Notes: Woodford Reserve Chocolate Malt Whisper  

Vital Stats: 45.2% ABV, 90.4 proof. Straight bourbon made of 72% corn, 18% rye, 10% malted barley. 375ml

Appearance: Deep amber with glints of mahogany.

Nose: The nose is unlike any other Woodford Reserve I’ve had before. Bright red apple is unmistakable at the beginning, accompanied by cedarwood. In the next wave, cinnamon and spearmint come through, but the spearmint feels out of place compared to the fruitiness of the dram. Toward the end of the nose is lemon peel and almond extract. Overall, the nose of whiskey reminds me of Cherry Vanilla Coke.

Palate: The whiskey starts with dry espresso and cherry. Lemon peel comes through, as well, which provides that citric acid feel of Cherry Vanilla Coke. Bittersweet chocolate and crème de cacao are abundant. The mixture of natural and artificial chocolate is what creates the sweetness in the whiskey. Almond extract and cedar finish off the palate.

Monk’s Road Cold Spring Distillery Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey, The Monk’s Road Bourbon label is a hard one to process because of the many names on the bottle. Monk’s Road is the product line, and Fifth District Series seems to refer to a series of single barrel releases, of which this is the first. What about the two distillery names? Log Still Distillery is the name of the company, and Cold Spring Distillery is an old distillery that used to be on their land. Its name came from the temperature of the spring, which was reportedly cold enough to allow the distillery to operate year-round.

If you look on the back of the label you will see that this was bottled by Log Still Distillery, meaning only that they put the liquid into the bottle. They don’t disclose where the bourbon inside was distilled. The front of the label gives some clarity on the stats of this whiskey, with an age statement of six years and an ABV of 50%. It also includes handwritten barrel and bottle numbers.

Tasting Notes: Log Still Distillery’s Monk’s Road Cold Spring Distillery Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey

Vital Stats: 50% ABV, aged six years, barrel #23, $125 per bottle.

Appearance: A clear honey color with a touch of amber; thin, long legs.

Nose: A lot of grain on the nose at first, with corn and wheat. A second nosing gives me notes of ethanol and crème brûlée.

Palate: This has a creamy texture up front that coats the mouth. I get caramel and vanilla first, like a nice custard. The flavor progresses to a hint of baking spice right before shifting to a dry, citrusy finish. Water made the creamy texture carry through longer but maintained much of the same flavor, just shifting intensity a bit. I got a bit more of a black pepper kind of spice on the finish when watered down.
